Getting started – 2009/10 |
2010 - what's coming up Quiet winter times? Not here. As well as the garden design projects under way for next year, we are developing exciting new products. New Urban Design Products Continuing innovation includes vertical green gardening and new green roof garden designs. We are working with specialist product manufacturers to launch our vertical 'green-wall' design system. This is based on proven technology and will add a new dimension to greening urban environments from shopping centres to rebuild projects, homes and gardens included. New Olive Trees Ebook We are still being asked questions about olive trees. We have olive guides and downloads, but you want more! We are now paying for an e-book production, which will be an e-book all about growing olive trees, and hopefully we will cover everything you want to know. If you want to make sure information you need is included you can contact us here by form or send us an email to info@eastofedenplants.co.uk with 'Olive Request' in the subject line. If you want to be alerted when the Olive Tree Guide ebook becomes available, or for any other of our news letters from time to time, create a free account and opt in to our mailing list. The price of the e-book will be reduced to account members. |

Green Christmas Appeal - why are we doing this? There is now over 200 times more carbon in the atmosphere than there was in the 1800's. This is causing our well-known global warming problem. Trees are made by absorbing carbon from the atmosphere through photo-synthesis. Every ton of carbon in a tree is a ton of carbon absorbed from the atmosphere. Green Christmas Appeal is a profit-making social enterprise that funds the Tree Appeal project. Trees are planted for you, expanding existing woodlands, and also working with schools creating both tree-scapes and encouraging budding new gardeners. The Tree Appeal plant native UK tree species. Of course, planting your own trees from us has the same atmospheric benefits, and you can now donate to Tree Appeal's extra tree planting scheme by asking us to make a Gift-aid donation on all orders. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our customers a very Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. The website is only the tip of the iceberg of what we do. If you want to ask us about your design project please get in touch with us. Contact us. |

Autumn - Winter Now is the time to plan for the busiest design time of the year - Autumn and winter. In any outside plantscape or garden design, it is the larger plants that define the scheme and the best time to give these plants the best attention is the Autumn through to the late winter, maximising the use of the dormant period. Our experience means we can plant any time of the year, but Nature still knows best and we make full use of this time. We have put together our autumn and winter tree and hedging lists, including bamboo hedges and a new hedge collection including Instant Green Screen Hedges. You can get ready to bring those beautiful plantscapes you have seen abroad: olives, palms, bamboos, bougainvillea, etc. etc. and plant them in your garden. The sky is the limit and we have the plants and planting know-how of what goes well in wet, dry, shade and full sun. The new Autumn and winter stock lists are ready for planting in designs. You can talk to us and pre-order by contacting us now. Hedges and trees are still the mainstay of structuring UK gardens. Our trees and hedges include the full UK favourites with additions of bamboos and green screens available as small, intermediate or full grown hedges and trees to make instant design impact. We cover every design solution with hedges and trees including tested new exotics. Talk to us about a full Mediterranean or tropical garden design for implementation ready for the summer of 2010. Now is the time to decide, so contact us about the outline of your new garden project. We will help you fill in the details. This time next year you can be sitting in the world garden of your dreams. Login or create an account for design and plant catalogue downloads - they're free. |

Gold at Hampton! more The year started for us with an exciting new development in Docklands and the completion of a truly magnificent Georgian Leisure and Garden Pool Room in Cheshire. The rapid-deadline of the new venue in Pan Peninsula, Docklands in conjunction with the Manser Practice was all completed on time thanks to everybody, with a special mention to Lechuza self-watering planters - and Theresa Green! Thanks everyone. The planters we used: here (We even have a new range of self-watering planters where you can specify your own colour) more |

What’s new in 2009 |
Gold at Hampton! Congratulations to brilliant designer Wendy Allen for making excellent use of our water-wise plant selection, along with other suppliers, and thanks to everyone who made the Rain Chain sustainable garden at Hampton Court Flower Show such a success. This garden deals with the new town planning requirements we must all now follow to help reduce the serious risk of flash flooding. Find out more about how you can create a garden to cope with heavy rain - and drought. You now need planning permission to create a hard standing area greater than 5 square metres (6 square yards). more
This is still a good time to talk to us about your project. NEW - Instant green hedges and a strong galvanised animal-proof fence From private courtyards and home gardens to architect-led projects we can help you with the right designs, plants for do-it-yourself or complete project management. The range of plants available has never been bigger, with even better price reductions. In Darwin's 200th year we want to make this a record breaking year with projects large and small. We are introducing our GREEN CREDITS Voucher Scheme to offer extra discounts on our entire plants range and green, environmentally friendly and sustainable products. Whether you want design support or just the plants and accessories, our accessory finder and plant finder and distribution service now extends across the UK and Europe. You can have a beautiful garden that has greenery all year round, low maintenance, calm and tranquil or stunningly dramatic. We have a wider choice of garden buildings and growing frames and professional tools than ever before. All you have to do is call.. or email..

12th Feb, Darwin Bicentenary, 1809-2009 |
Thanks to Darwin we all know how plants are related to each other, and to the whole tree of life - which includes us. What better way to celebrate 200 years of Darwin than with an evolutionary garden. |
Nature's news is Good News |
| Organic gardening started with the instinctive notion that there ought to be more to it than pouring chemicals onto plants. How true this is. | ||
| Organic gardening is about feeding the soil, not the plants; get the soil right and the rest follows. | ||
| Thanks to Darwin and evolutionary biology, we now understand that plants do not live alone in the soil, but are partnered with hidden friends called mycorrhizal fungi that vastly increase the root capacity of plants providing extra water and nutrients, especially in drought. They have been around since plants evolved. | ||
Planting with mycorrhizal fungi is a one-off, cheap and permanent way to get nature on your side. Want to save on chemical fertilisers, watering and still give your plants a good start with 24 hour aftercare? Let mycorrhizal fungi do it for you. We do. There is more good news for gardening with mycorrhizal fungi because we are running our Rootgrow Mycorrhizal Fungi Competition again! more

Start an Evolution Garden |
What better way to celebrate Darwin's 200th birthday than by starting an Evolution Garden? When the first land plants evolved from cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), so did the mycorrhizal fungi to support them. This natural symbiosis still continues in your garden today. That's why we plant out with Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi as standard. (Used at Kew and featured on Gardeners' World. It's now endorsed by the RHS Growers' Association, their first soil product endorsement ever). Moss, lichen, liverworts, ferns, cycads, Wollemi Pine, magnolia are all early ground breaking plant species. We will be giving more advice on this. You can see for yourselves which plants have a symbiotic relationship with the evolution of mycorrhizal fungi. The best pictures sent in will win more mycorrhizal fungi in the Rootgrow Competition, enough for the average gardener's flowers, fruit and veg, shrubs, pots and hanging baskets for a year! There is a serious commercial benefit to planting with Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi. It is used to benefit early and equal establishing of plants in commercial settings, like our planting in the Royal William Yard and Kew Gardens. Going mycorrhizal is organic, cheap and easy. A pinch of dry granules in the planting hole and the job is done. Most plants are totally dependent on mycorrhiza in the soil. Read about the science, case studies and enter the competition for mycorrhizal fungi. More |
Plant an ancient tree The Wollemi Pine (Australia) is a cousin of the Monkey Puzzle (South America) and has less than 100 trees surviving in the wild. It is a rare species of Cretaceous plantlife which you can buy from us for yourself or give as a gift. Remarkably, it has survived 17 ice ages and looks as ancient as that suggests. Each plant comes with an authentication certificate, and royalties will be used to support the ongoing protection of the Wollemi Pine and other rare and threatened plant species in NSW, Australia. |

Darwin’s 200th Birthday ~
![]() |
As plant biologists we celebrate Darwin’s great work every day. As professional plantscape designers and builders, the last thing we want is plants dying through plant shock or lack of aftercare; even a single loss of a large plant specimen can seriously dent the profit margin. |
So when we say we use mycorrhizal fungi to improve early plant establishment, prevent drought stress AND keep the plants fed, you know we mean it! It’s cheaper than costly chemicals, too. |
Read about the science, case studies and enter the competition for mycorrhizal fungi. From gift packs to wholesale, distributing from America to the Middle East, we supply and promote British mycorrhizal fungi soil restoration. More |
Reduce Stress – live in a beautiful garden |
Life’s too short to live in bad gardens We protect your investment by providing the correct plants in the correct locations, provide you with guidance from self-watering planters to hydroponics. We have solutions for every space from courtyards to coastlines, conservatories to urban landscapes, green rooftops to rivieras - all based on sound plant biology. |
