Hampton Court Palace RHS Flower Show 2008 - Hydroponics |

Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 2008 |
Design ThemeThe background inspiration for this garden is the threat posed by man to the plant environment; the theme of this garden is an imaginary world of the future where plants we used to take for granted must be protected from the harsh environment we have created. The design is a spa for the plants, where they are pampered and protected, while the humans are the spectators in the outside world. It is intended to draw attention to the issues through the beauty and simplicity of the structural concept. To give a global perspective to the design theme, the arms of the trees in each pod will be planted with specimens representing a different major Biome, to include: Rainforest, Mediterranean and Desert regions of the world. While this is a very conceptual rather than a practical garden, and one not designed to reflect a specific habitat, it will reflect three different biomes. It will be designed for sustainability and ease of maintenance; in fact the hydroponics planting approach is highly efficient and sustainable (needing only 1/10 of the water of normal planting) and offers real potential for the future, including starving nation’s land whose soil can no longer sustain viable crops. StructureThere are three key elements to the garden structure:
The circular base has a low retaining wall to contain the water, and the garden itself can be viewed from around the boundary of the garden where people can walk around it. The garden is designed to sit within its own space and is more likely to be used as a feature in urban design, but could on a smaller scale be used in a domestic situation. Soil, aspect and conditions as relating to plantingThe plants will be grown in a recirculating hydroponic system, and therefore will not require soil as a medium. The plants are grown in a constant flow of nutrient enriched water. The system itself allows for partial heating of the water in order to protect the roots.
Hydroponics are now widely used in horticulture for yield, quality and pest control. A large variety of cut flowers, fruit and vegetables in our supermarkets are already hydroponically grown. About 80% of all our tomatoes are grown using hydroponic systems.
