RHS - Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Sustainable Garden Themes WENDY ALLEN DESIGNS Plants by East of Eden Plants and other specialist growers. COME AND SEE OUR 'WATER-WISE' PLANTS AND TALK TO US AT WENDY ALLEN'S SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CALLED 'THE RAIN CHAIN' FEATURED AT THIS YEAR'S Wendy's design has come together using plants from several specialist growers. Having worked with us before and knowing about our Kew Gardens Coastal Mediterranean theme, Wendy approached us for the supply of plants for her fabulous small sustainable garden design. Our Peter and Wendy are presently exploring future collaborative design work with an inspirational twist particularly based on sustainable themes including roof gardens in which they both have a specialism.
Featuring a green roof and a rain garden to absorb rainwater and reduce the risk of flash flooding, our urban front garden features in the first ever Sustainable Gardens category at the show. The rear wall is made from 100% recyclable, FSC approved Accoya timber (50 year durability softwood) from renewable resources. It has been especially constructed by Westgate Joinery to be rebuilt as a Summerhouse after the show.

Category: Sustainable Gardens Garden: The Rain Chain
Our collaboration at Hampton Court this year is with outstanding London designer Wendy Allen. Congratulations on a gold, Wendy!!
As with all RHS Hampton Court Shows, there is a serious side to gardening. This year there is a new Category to reflect the changes we must make in our built environment. This garden is a realisation within Hadlow College's Sustainable Learning Community program.
'Set in a coastal railway town in southern England, this urban front garden channels rainfall via a green roof, water butt and rain chain to a rain garden, where it can soak away gradually. The rain garden plants like moist or waterlogged soil but will also tolerate dryer periods'
No longer is it permissible to create an impermeable area bigger than 5 square metres (6 square yards) in town gardens without planning permission. The combined effect of everyone making great areas of slabs, where the rain water cannot escape, has led to the serious problem of flash flooding. The design also includes how to create sustainable green roofing, which helps reduce urban over-warming as well as adding a carbon and air-pollutants sink.
Planning law changes - concrete gets the boot - more

Let it rain - let it drain - concrete gets the boot No longer is it permissible to create an impermeable area bigger than 5 square metres (6 square yards) in town gardens without planning permission. The combined effect of everyone making great areas of slabs, where the rain water cannot escape, worsens the already serious problem of flash flooding. This design uses both absorbent surfaces and 'green screen' instant hedging instead of boundary walls to help avoid creating flood problems. The design also includes how to create sustainable green roofing, which helps reduce urban over-warming as well as adding a carbon and air-pollutants sink.
