Instant hedging - Escallonia Crimson Spire evergreen instant hedge.
Produces leathery, dark green glossy leaves with a slightly serrated edge which creat the perfect back drop for the five petaled crimson pink flowers. Traditionally grown as a seaside hedge, it can be grown in nearly all parts of the country if given some protection especially in colder Northern regions. It will also thrive in urban areas that tend to be a little warmer.
With frequent pruning, Escallonia Crimson Spire evergreen instant hedge can be kept at around 80 cm in height, however the heavier the pruning the fewer flowers will be produced.
The optimum time for pruning is after the flowering period as it will be a valuable source of nectar for pollinators. Left unprunned, this variety can grow up to 2 m high but will become woody and bare towards the base. It is best trimmed with a taper so the bottom is slightly wider than the top to ensure good leaf cover all over the plant especially towards the base.
