Although the time has passed to plant hedging using bare root or root ball plants, you can continue planting our well established instant hedges, instant living screens and container grown trees.
They are a superior option as they have a mature root system which permits planting in the ground or in planters at any time of the year.
It is easy to see why instant hedges are in high demand when you consider their unique INSTANT benefits:
Whatever your reason for an instant hedge, our thriving finished hedges have you covered. We have a variety of excellent options that are perfectly suited to hedging and can be easily pruned to keep them tight and at the desired height.
Commonly known as Portuguese Laurel, this small leaved attractive evergreen shrub is the ideal hedging species for a changing climate.
The leaves are smaller than the straight Prunus lusitanica and are a polished dark green colour, and are held on a reddish stem which can fade in colour as the plant ages. The red stems and branches add a unique visual appeal, especially against the dark green leaves
If the plant is pruned frequently it will not produce flowers or set fruit, and will form a dense even hedge, that provides year-round interest.
As it responds to pruning really well, Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia also lends itself to topiary, including balls and other shapes.
If left unpruned it will produce a creamy white candle-like flower in late spring, followed by small black berries.
Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia is one of our favourite hedging plants, being a very versatile plant that tolerates clipping into shapes and makes an excellent, dense screen or windbreak, thriving in a variety of well-drained soils in sun or partial shade.
It exhibits good drought tolerance once established and is resistant to wind, even coastal sea winds.
